        Let us hope this does not pass or come into effect as it is madness. As if Volvo limiting all their cars was not bad enough the EU (European Union) is taking things a step further. Cars will be fitted with a mandatory speed limiter, emergency braking system, and electronic data recorders.


        This proposal is set to be ratified by the European parliament in September. Knowing the EU, it will pass, and this effectively will be the end of driving freedom.

        Safety campaigners described the move as one of the biggest leaps forward in 50 years and said it could save 25,000 lives by 2037.

        The package of measures needs to be ratified by the European parliament, which is likely by September.

        The speed limiter device, called intelligent speed assistance (ISA), uses GPS data and sign recognition cameras to detect speed limits where the car is travelling, and then will sound a warning and automatically slow the vehicle down if it is exceeding the limit.
        Imagine not only the limiter but the data recorder showing authorities how you drive and them coming to your home to arrest you for missing stop signs, speeding, lack of signaling, whatever. Think this is far fetched? The UK arrests people for Tweets. Yes, for freaking Tweets.

        The UK stated they would adopt whatever safety rules the EU passes.

        What does this mean for European enthusiasts? It means the used car market will become very appealing. It means driving freedom effectively ends preparing people for an autonomous future. It means the government is taking over driving.

        What does this mean for American enthusiasts? We'll stick to American cars and freedom, thanks.

          They could easily mandate speed and acceleration limiters in vehicles if there was the political wind. I hope it never comes to that though. =/

          They would only be able to pull it off for new cars. So at least there is that...

          I heard a report on that, and one of the ideas they had was to retrofit older cars with devices similar to the DUI lockouts that control the speed in your pre 2022 model, at the owners expense of course. But, hopefully it doesn't come to that, and more so, that it stays out of the U.S.

          I was about to say I would take a hard BREXIT on this........... Well played EU. I look forward to not visiting anywhere that isn't Switzerland, because I'm not driving in your countries.

          You have never been to Switzerland then. If there’s ever been a country set on hunting people over speed limits, confiscating cars and all, it is the Swiss. I only drive there if there’s no other alternative at all...

          I have been to Switzerland, but their astonishingly good train system means you never have to drive anywhere. The perfect European country. You're essentially going to be a passenger in your own car, so may as well cut out the middle man and ride the cheap and fast trains instead.

          Yeah the train system means you really never need to drive. Plus you can always go just a hop skip and a jump to Germany or Austria and drive as fast as you want on nice roads.

          Switzerland is awesome, my wife is going to Zurich in the next few weeks for a final interview. We might be moving there in a few months.

          That's awesome. If you have the opportunity I'd pop into Geneva for a few hours and go to Patek Philippe museum, I wasn't into watches at the time I went but had an appreciation for all things mechanical from my love of cars, after 5 hours I was totally converted. They also have their flagship boutique in Geneva and they'll let you try on $1mm+ USD watches.

          One of the guys in a watch group I'm a part of actually does that, often posting pictures with high horology Richard Milles that are 800K+ or Patek minute repeaters like this one, that are actually quite subtle (but those are a mere 335k):

          It was great. I've been to Bern and Lugano as well. Bern is my personal favourite, stayed in a 200 year old house that was an airbnb, it was so cool.
